Krakatoa Light Tag

Introduction

The Krakatoa Light Tag can be used to override some of the CINEMA 4D light attributes.

It also exposes some native Krakatoa properties that are not available in the CINEMA 4D lights.

Most of the time though, the CINEMA 4D lights should be usable in Krakatoa C4D directly without the need for this Tag.

Creation

To add a Krakatoa Light Tag, select a Krakatoa particle source object, right-click it and select (New Tag) > Krakatoa Tags > Krakatoa Light.

Only one Light tag can be added to a particular light, and its settings will appear as another tab of the Light's Attributes editor.

User Interface

Setup tab

Contains the general override settings that apply to all light types.

Override Color checkbox 

  • Unchecked by default
  • When checked, the Color, Intensity and Decay Exponent of the underlying light will be overridden with the Tag's values. 

Color picker 

  • Default is white.
  • When the Override Color checkbox is checked, overrides the color of the light source. 

Intensity spinner ans slider 

  • Default is 100%.
  • When the Override Color checkbox is checked, overrides the intensity multiplier of the light source. 

Decay Exponent spinner and slider 

  • Default is 0.
  • When the Override Color checkbox is checked, overrides the Decay type of the light using an exponential falloff:
    • 0 - no falloff (since N^0 = 1)
    • 1 - linear falloff (since N^1 = N)
    • 2 - inverse square falloff (physically correct)
    • 3 - inverse cubic falloff
    • and so on 

 

Override Shadow checkbox 

  • Unchecked by default.
  • When checked, the Enable Shadow, Shadow Density and Shadow Width attributes of the underlying light will be overridden with the Tag's values. 

Enable Shadow checkbox 

  • Checked by default
  • When unchecked, the light will not cast shadows from geometry objects.
  • Note that all lights will always cast shadows from particles onto particles since this is an integral part of the volumetric rendering algorithm. 

Shadow Density spinner and slider 

  • Default is 100%.
  • When the Override Shadow checkbox is checked, sets the Shadow Density of the underlying light.
  • This value affects the Lighting Pass Density of the particles per light - setting the override to 50% will render the particles as half as dense when illuminating with this light. 

Shadow Width spinner and slider 

  • Default is 512.
  • When the Override Shadow checkbox is checked, sets the Attenuation Map size of the underlying light.
  • Higher values produce more precise shadows, but require a lot more particles to cover all texels.
  • Lower values produce blurrier shadows and require less particles.

Point Light tab

Only used when the underlying light is an Omni light.

dtex nx/ny/nz/px/py/pz filename fields and buttons

  • These fields can be used to supply PRMan DTex files to use as explicit attenuation maps.

EXR Input Map filename field and button

  • This field can be used to specify an EXR Deep Opacity Map file sequence to be used as explicit attenuation map source.
  • Currently, only Krakatoa MX can generate these files.

EXR Output Map filename field and button

  • For future use.

Direct Light tab

Only used when the underlying light is a Parallel or Infinite light.

Shape list

  • Defines the shape of the light.
  • Possible values are
    • square (default)
    • round

Aspect Ratio spinner and slider

  • Defines the Aspect Ratio of the light's cone.
  • Default is 1 (square or circle depending on the Shape mode)
  • Note that other than the CINEMA 4D behavior, Krakatoa's Aspect Ration attempts to preserve the area of the cone's cross-section. As the one side gets longer, the other becomes proportionally shorter.
