Frost (Heart) Krakatoa
Thursday, February 10, 2011 at 6:01PM Thinkbox Software is currently beta testing an upcoming product called Frost. We wanted to share an exciting side effect of using Frost together with Krakatoa, Thinkbox's production-proven volumetric particle renderer. It answers the often-asked question "How do I create more particles out of my simulation data" in quite an elegant way.
The following image shows a simple splash simulation created using Next Limit's RealFlow software. The simulation contained only 198,000 particles and even at 640x480 did not provide enough particles to produce dense enough results.

The next image shows the same simulation passed through the Frost particle mesher, then converted back to a denser cloud containing 1,832,000 particles courtesy of the Krakatoa PRT Volume object. The original RealFlow particles velocities were preserved throughout the conversion so the new particles could be rendered with the same motion blur effect!

To render a 2K resolution image, the same setup was used to increase the particle count 171 times (!) to 34 million particles, producing a nice dense particle cloud in a matter of seconds.
